Most sewage tanks in Sharjah are emptied regularly and cleaned almost never. From the outside the two jobs look identical — a tanker arrives, the tank goes down — so it is easy to pay for one and receive the other for years. The tank tells you the difference over time. Here is what to look for.
Emptying versus cleaning
Emptying removes the liquid. Cleaning removes the settled solids at the bottom of the tank and the layer coating its walls and floor, which pumping alone will not lift. A tank that is only emptied keeps that layer, and the layer grows. The tank's design capacity does not change, but its usable capacity shrinks every year, and so does the time between visits.
Five signs your tank needs cleaning
- It needs emptying more often than it used to, with no change in the number of people using it. This is the clearest sign and the most common one.
- A strong smell persists even after the tank has just been emptied. Fresh liquid does not smell like that; a thick layer of old sludge does.
- The tanker driver reports thick sludge or a solid layer at the bottom when pumping. Ask the driver what they saw.
- Drains are still slow immediately after a pump-out, which suggests the outlet or the inlet is partly obstructed by accumulated material.
- The tank has been in service for years and, as far as anyone knows, has only ever been pumped.
What happens if you keep pumping only
The interval keeps shrinking. A tank that once lasted a month lasts three weeks, then two. You pay for more and more visits to remove less and less liquid, and eventually the layer is deep enough that the tank overflows between collections that used to be comfortably spaced. What a proper cleaning involves
The tank is pumped out completely, including the settled solids rather than just the liquid above them. The interior is cleaned down so the walls and floor are not left coated. Everything removed goes into the tanker and is discharged at the Sharjah Municipality treatment plant in Al Sajaa. The work is done through the access cover, so the tank does not need to be exposed or dug out. Afterwards the tank holds what it was built to hold, and the collection interval stretches back out to where it should be.
How often does a tank need cleaning?
It depends on how the tank is used. A restaurant grease chamber builds up solids in weeks; a villa tank takes far longer. Rather than follow a fixed rule, use the signs above, and ask the driver at each emptying how much sludge they can see.
